CALL for Volunteers

Legal Information Team on Samos

The association Refugee Law Clinic Berlin e.V. was founded in 2014 at the Humboldt University of Berlin with the aim to provide free legal information to asylum seekers.

In addition to local assistance in Germany, the Refugee Law Clinics have also been carrying out legal information projects for asylum seekers on the Greek islands, focusing on the special procedures implemented through the EU-Turkey-Deal. The first project of this kind was initiated as a cooperation of Refugee Law Clinics in June 2016 on the island of Chios and has since been established independently by Equal Rights Beyond Borders (former Refugee Law Clinics Abroad).

Since February 2018 a second project on the island of Samos has been established by the Refugee Law Clinic Berlin. The legal information on Samos is provided by a legal team consisting of a supervising coordinator, 2 to 3 volunteers and 3 translators.

The work consists of:

  • General legal information about the asylum procedures under Directive 2013/32/EU, Directive

       2013/33/EU and Directive 2011/95/EU

  • Accompaniment to asylum interviews in the Hotspot

  • Supporting family reunification cases under Dublin III - Regulation and Council Directive

      2003/86/EC

  • Cooperate with on-site actors on vulnerability cases

The Refugee Law Clinic Berlin is looking for volunteers (law students or lawyers) who wish to be part of the legal team on Samos from January to end of April 2020. A minimum stay of six weeks is required, with even longer stays preferred. Shorter stays are possible for practicing migration lawyers. Accommodation will be provided; travel costs are self-financed (please note: RLC Berlin may be able to cover travel costs if a stay on Samos would not otherwise be possible).

Students enrolled at a European University who wish to stay for more than two months (60 days) can apply for funding by Erasmus+ (~450€/month). RLC Berlin can assist with the procedure.

Volunteers will receive a training before leaving for Samos. If you are interested in volunteering please send us a short message describing your counselling experience in migration law and your CV as well as the proposed dates of stay until November 10, 2019 to:
