In the RLC advanced seminar “Advisory Skills in Legal Counseling for Migrants,” the insights gained from the lecture “Introduction to Residence and Asylum Law” will be expanded on a practical level to prepare participants for advisory work, especially within the RLC framework. At the same time, theoretical content from the first semester will be briefly reviewed.
Using case studies and practical exercises, students will apply and deepen their knowledge of the asylum procedure, the various protection statuses, and residence permits. The focus will be on issues that RLC advisors are currently frequently encountering in practice. In addition to various asylum-related questions, challenges related to residence law also regularly arise during counseling sessions. Drawing from real-world counseling scenarios, the course will also emphasize long-term residence security and naturalization.
Special attention will be given to working with individuals with special protection needs during counseling situations. Various organizations in Berlin and Brandenburg will be introduced, which are key partners in providing comprehensive legal support with their services. Furthermore, participants will be taught practical skills such as fact-finding, research methods, and credibility assessment techniques.
This course in the summer semester, together with the internship, serves to expand and deepen the knowledge gained from the winter semester lecture, in order to comprehensively prepare for counseling work. Following a successful selection process and under the supervision of fully qualified lawyers, participants will then begin individual case counseling as part of one of the advisory teams.
The combination of academic learning and practical experience aims to introduce students to a complex and important area of law and provide valuable hands-on experience in legal counseling—complementing the theory-focused academic studies and preparing them for careers in the field of asylum and migration law.
