Implementation of the GEAS - A European Comparison

2 min read

In June 2026, the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) entered into force. The legal acts introduce comprehensive changes that significantly alter asylum and migration law in Europe.

As the result of a European policy-making process, the CEAS has direct or indirect legal relevance for the entire European Union and for other states. That makes a transnational comparison necessary, which is the aim of this lecture series in the winter semester 26/27. The comparative course examines the CEAS from a practical perspective within the European context, provides an opportunity to identify cross-connections and compare specific application practices.

This approach is particularly relevant because most of the provisions of the CEAS are set out in regulations and, unlike before, directly applicable in the Member States. Furthermore, although specific implementation practices will certainly vary from country to country the CEAS is also an effort to harmonize the European asylum system. The comparative analysis of individual member states and their implementation of the CEAS allow for a critical reflection on the extent to which this objective is (or is not) being achieved.

In this lecture series, experts with practical experience in the application of migration law from various EU member states will provide insights into their respective national contexts and of the implementation of the reformed CEAS. Thematic emphasis will be placed on comparing the different approaches to applying the CEAS and identifying concrete, practical questions. The course will be held in English.
