The European Court of Human Rights has exceptionally directed the Greek Government to take action to protect a number of vulnerable asylum-seekers. Among them are two mothers and their new-born babies, a pregnant woman, a woman requiring life-saving surgery, and an unaccompanied minor with serious mental health issues.
RLC Berlin is assisting them with their challenges to the inhuman and degrading conditions in the Samos camp for asylum-seekers. We are highlighting the Government’s failure to protect them from the spread of Covid-19.
The Court has directed the Government to urgently specify “which measures have been taken or are planned to be put in place in relation to the COVID-19 risk”.
We await the Government’s reply and we will be providing our own response. However, the position has been clearly described by MSF https://www.msf.org.uk/article/covid-19-evacuation-squalid-greek-camps-more-urgent-ever-light-coronavirus-pandemic?fbclid=IwAR1WS5T2UTcVEJtEiY614IQqID563mdIsxTwZPElWfvQyscjNLf7V_1_lQg and HRW (see below).

I’ve been following the discussion on the ECtHR ruling and Greece’s COVID-19 measures, and it highlights how tricky proportionality issues can be in emergencies. When I was reading up on similar liability questions, I found some helpful explanations on The Wilson PC site, especially their Greenville personal injury lawyer resources, which break down how responsibility is assessed in real cases.
This was an interesting update to read, especially given how urgent those concerns were at the time. On a lighter note, when I’m looking for a bit of entertainment in my free time, I sometimes play Speed Stars it’s simple, engaging, and a fun way to relax for a few minutes.
