Press release - Greek government agrees to pay compensation for inhumane living conditions

On 21 January 2021, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) published a decision in the case of Ms. H.A through which it confirmed a settlement between the parties. Ethiopian national Ms. H.A. was 6 months pregnant when she arrived to the (Greek) island of Samos where she planned to apply for asylum. Despite her pregnancy, authorities neglected to provide her further material assistance, forcing her to reside in a makeshift shelter in the Samos „hotspot“ for nearly three months. The Greek government agreed to compensate her for any damages that she suffered as a result of the inhumane and degrading living conditions in the camp. However, these conditions have yet to cease, and thousands of people must still endure similar circumstances.
During the procedure Ms. H.A. was represented by the team of Refugee Law Clinic Berlin e.V.

Europäischer Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte: Griechische Regierung akzeptiert Entschädigungszahlungen für unmenschliche und erniedrigende Lebensbedingungen im "Hotspot" auf Samos
Am 21. Januar 2021 veröffentlichte der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte (EGMR) eine Entscheidung im Fall von Frau H.A., mit der er eine zwischen den Parteien geschlossene gütliche Einigung bestätigte. Die äthiopische Staatsangehörige Frau H.A. war im sechsten Monat schwanger, als sie auf der Insel Samos (Griechenland) ankam, um Asyl zu beantragen. Trotz ihrer Schwangerschaft wurde sie von den Behörden ohne weitere materielle Unterstützung zurückgelassen und lebte fast drei Monate lang in einer behelfsmäßigen Unterkunft im "Hotspot" von Samos. Die griechische Regierung erklärte sich bereit, eine Entschädigung für alle Schäden zu zahlen, die H.A. aufgrund der unmenschlichen und erniedrigenden Lebensbedingungen in dem Lager erlitten hat. Doch diese Lebensbedingungen haben nicht aufgehört zu existieren, Tausende von Menschen ertragen immer noch ähnliche Bedingungen.
Während des Verfahrens wurde Frau H.A. durch das Team der Refugee Law Clinic Berlin e.V. vertreten.
