As Law Clinics, we conduct our work at the intersection of legal theory and activism. These two spheres are usually considered separately and often thought to be contradictory. However, working together they have great potential to strengthen each other and contribute to progressive change.
What could such a collaboration look like? How can legal theory and activist work benefit from each other? Can activism push research to become an ally of progressive change? And how does research work inform and sustain activism?
These questions will be discussed specifically with regard to gender and flight. The current asylum and migration law systems pose major challenges for LGBTIQA* refugees at all stages of their journey and are far from bringing justice and equality. We would like to shed light on problems of the European asylum system for LGBTIQA* refugees in order to then talk about how an alliance between legal theory and activism could contribute to facing them.
The Humboldt Law Clinic Grund- und Menschenrechte and the Refugee Law Clinic Berlin e.V. are jointly organizing this event.

Dr. Petra Sußner, legal scholar of migration law and legal gender studies at the Humboldt-University of Berlin, who recently published her book “Flucht-Geschlecht-Sexualität” (“Flight-Gender-Sexuality”)
Faris Cuchi Gezahegn, LGBTIQA* and human rights advocate and performance artist with their own flight experience

Opening: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Lembke, Professor of Public Law and Gender Studies, is head of the Humboldt Law Clinic for Fundamental and Human Rights and member of the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at the Humboldt-University of Berlin
Moderation: Johanna Mantel, lecturer of the Refugee Law Clinic Berlin e.V. and editor at the Informationsverbund Asyl- und Migration, who has recently co-edited a legal commentary on the German Asylum and Reisdence Acts, which is the first such publication to be held in gender-neutral language.
